Programs
We are extending a special scholarship, usually available only to VCU alumni, to ALL our new Fall 2026 Master's in Gerontology students: a $500 scholarship and a waiver of the application fee.
In addition, newly accepted students can receive up to $2,500 in scholarships in Fall 2026 based on your enrollment status. Multiple scholarships are available.
The purpose of our program is threefold:
- To train qualified professionals to work in administrative, planning, service delivery and instructional and staff development positions in programs and services for elders at the national, state and local levels.
- To provide an opportunity for those studying in other disciplines, and whose work will encompass service to aging people, to integrate their own training with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the aging process.
- To stimulate the design and execution of gerontological research across multiple disciplines.
Certifications in Aging Studies
Strengthen your career in aging services with our 9-credit undergraduate certificate in aging studies or 15-credit graduate certificate in aging studies. You can complete this certificate at your own pace as full-time or part-time. VCU Gerontology offers two certification programs:
Accelerated B.S. to M.S. Program
VCU offers a number of accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s degree programs that allow academically talented undergraduate students to earn both degrees in a minimum of five years by taking approved graduate-level courses during the senior year of their undergraduate program. The Accelerated Master’s in Gerontology is currently available in partnership with the following undergraduate programs:
- Health Services, Bachelor of Science
- Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Science
- Sociology, Bachelor of Science

M.S. in Gerontology
Our M.S. in Gerontology program will give you a cost-effective competitive edge by teaching in demand, applicable skills to make a difference in people's lives. In only 30 credits, you can graduate prepared for high-impact, satisfying careers in aging services, health care leadership, community development and more. VCU Gerontology offers two concentrations:
Ph.D. in Health Related Sciences
The Ph.D. Program in Health Related Sciences is an innovative hybrid program designed for working health professionals to learn research skills for solving real-world problems.
